For buccal delivery, the tablet disintegrates into a soft, adhesive gel designed to remain against the inner cheek. This contact supports the passage of the medicine through the oral mucosa.

Each formulation is tailored to its medicine and intended population. Adhesion can be adjusted to maintain contact with the oral mucosa for buccal uptake, or to allow it to disintegrate and be swallowed as a conventional orally disintegrating tablet.
